Castagnolo’s group has a strong focus on sustainability and drug discovery. Their research activity is mainly focused on the development of new biocatalytic and chemo-enzymatic reactions for the sustainable synthesis of chemicals, drugs and building blocks as well as on the design of alternative strategies in drug discovery to combat antimicrobial resistance. Not many laboratories in the world could combine sustainable drug synthesis with infectious diseases expertise. For this reason, a STSM in his group can allow me to acquire competence in biocatalysis to be applied to CNSL for the discovery of new antiparasitic compounds to be then tested by laboratory members from the same CA21111 network (preliminary arrangements have already been made). In addition, this STSM will be the first one between two COST member labs and thus instrumental to enforcing collaboration.

This STSM will be an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic and international research group, working at Chemistry Department, University College London, one of the top chemistry departments in the UK and ranked second best in the UK for most impactful research. Here, I will have the opportunity to learn deeply about Green Chemistry, biocatalysis and enzymatic reactions.
